The Ultimate Itinerary

Day 1

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport

The journey begins with your arrival at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport . Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your group hotel for a short rest and freshening up. Later in the day, a detailed pre-trip meeting will be conducted to discuss the complete itinerary, riding guidelines, safety protocols, and to introduce you to your fellow riders. If time permits, a brief orientation visit to a landmark such as India Gate may be included. In the evening, you will be transferred to the bus terminal to board a comfortable overnight Volvo bus to Manali, covering a distance of approximately 540 km over 12–14 hours.

Day 2

Manali to Jibhi

The real adventure begins as you ride out of Manali towards Jibhi. This approximately 100 km journey takes you through the beautiful Kullu Valley and into the serene Tirthan Valley. The route offers a mix of smooth tarmac and winding mountain roads, surrounded by forests and rivers, setting the tone for the days ahead. You will be staying overnight in Jibhi, located at an altitude of about 1,600 meters (5,249 ft).

Day 3

Arrival in Manali

The real adventure begins as you ride out of Manali towards Jibhi. This approximately 100 km journey takes you through the beautiful Kullu Valley and into the serene Tirthan Valley. The route offers a mix of smooth tarmac and winding mountain roads, surrounded by forests and rivers, setting the tone for the days ahead. You will be staying overnight in Jibhi, located at an altitude of about 1,600 meters (5,249 ft).

Day 4

Jibhi to Sarahan

Your ride continues from Jibhi to Sarahan, covering a distance of approximately 130 km. As you travel deeper into the mountains, the altitude gradually increases and the landscapes become more dramatic. Sarahan is a small Himalayan town known for the ancient Bhimakali Temple and offers stunning views of snow-clad peaks. The altitude here is approximately 2,313 meters (7,589 ft). Overnight stay in Sarahan.

Day 5

Sarahan to Kalpa

Today’s journey takes you from Sarahan to Kalpa, a ride of approximately 90 km. The route follows the roaring Satluj River, with the terrain becoming noticeably more rugged and raw. Kalpa is famous for its spectacular panoramic views of the Kinnaur Kailash range and its peaceful mountain setting. The altitude of Kalpa is approximately 2,960 meters (9,711 ft). Overnight stay in Kalpa.

Day 6

Kalpa to Tabo – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

A major transition day as you leave the greener valleys of Kinnaur and enter the cold desert landscape of Spiti. The ride from Kalpa to Tabo covers approximately 150 km and includes challenging road conditions in parts. Tabo is home to the ancient Tabo Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the most significant cultural centers of the region. The village lies at an altitude of approximately 3,280 meters (10,761 ft). Overnight stay in Tabo.

Day 7

To Kaza

Today is a relatively short ride of about 50 km to Kaza, the main town and administrative hub of the Spiti Valley. Located at an altitude of approximately 3,800 meters (12,467 ft), Kaza serves as an important base for acclimatization. The shorter riding distance allows time to rest, explore the local market, or simply relax and adapt to the increasing altitude. Overnight stay in Kaza.

Day 8

From Kaza to Keylong

One of the more challenging riding days, covering approximately 180 km from Kaza to Keylong. You will cross the high Kunzum Pass, which connects Spiti Valley to the Lahaul Valley. Road conditions can be rough in sections, but the scenery is dramatic and rewarding. After crossing the pass, the route descends into the greener Lahaul region. Keylong is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,080 meters (10,105 ft). Overnight stay in Keylong.

Day 9

From Keylong to Sarchu via Baralacha La Pass

You continue your ascent today, riding approximately 110 km from Keylong to Sarchu. The journey includes crossing the formidable Baralacha La Pass and riding through vast high-altitude landscapes. Sarchu is a remote high-altitude plateau located on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 ft). Overnight stay in fixed camps at Sarchu.

Day 10

Sarchu to Leh

This is the final and most iconic riding day on the Manali–Leh highway. The approximately 250 km journey from Sarchu to Leh involves crossing several high passes, including Nakee La, Lachulung La, and Tanglang La. You will also ride through the famous Gata Loops and across the expansive More Plains. Upon arrival in Leh, located at an altitude of about 3,500 meters (11,483 ft), you will check into your hotel for an overnight stay.

Relaxing at Altitude of 3,500 Meters – Leh

This day is reserved for rest and acclimatization in Leh. Spending an additional day at this altitude is essential before heading towards even higher regions. You may explore the local markets, visit Leh Palace, or simply relax at the hotel. Overnight stay in Leh.

Day 12

From Leh to Hanle

Today’s journey takes you approximately 260 km from Leh to Hanle, a remote village in eastern Ladakh. The ride passes through vast open landscapes and high-altitude terrain. Hanle is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory and lies within an officially designated Dark Sky Reserve, making it one of the best places for stargazing. The altitude here is approximately 4,250 meters (13,944 ft). Overnight stay in Hanle.

Day 13

From Hanle to the Mighty Umling La Pass

This is the highlight of the expedition. You will ride approximately 160 km (round trip) from Hanle to Umling La Pass, which at about 5,883 meters (19,300 ft) is the world’s highest motorable pass. The challenging terrain and extreme altitude make this day both demanding and deeply rewarding. After reaching the pass, you will ride back to Hanle for an overnight stay.

Day 14

Ride Back to Leh

A long yet scenic ride back to Leh, covering approximately 260 km. With proper acclimatization, the ride is comfortable and allows you to fully appreciate the vast and dramatic landscapes of Ladakh. Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel in Leh for an overnight stay.

Departure from Leh Airport
